Mac Owners Want Their Disk Space Back

Futurism reports that Mac users are turning to RemoveMacAI, an open-source tool whose developer says it disables Apple Intelligence features and prevents further downloads.

Owners of storage-constrained Macs could reclaim meaningful space, but an unsupported removal tool may leave them responsible for compatibility checks and recovery.

The sensible comparison is not AI enthusiasm versus AI rejection. It is the value of features an owner actually uses against their storage footprint and the work required to remove them. Apple should make that choice understandable without requiring customers to become their own maintenance department.

Some Mac users are turning to RemoveMacAI to clear unwanted Apple AI software from their computers, Futurism reports. The open-source tool’s developer says it disables Siri, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, and the ChatGPT Extension. The report puts potential storage savings at around 12 GB and cites users who say their Apple AI installation occupies 35 GB. Those figures are not a controlled before-and-after test.

The storage complaint has a practical basis. On a MacBook with 256 GB of nominal storage, 12 GB is roughly 5 percent of that capacity, while 35 GB approaches 14 percent. Actual savings will depend on what a machine has installed and what the tool removes. A feature can be useful to one owner and an unwelcome tenant on another owner’s disk.

Futurism also reports that macOS 27 removed a setting that allowed users to disable and delete Apple Intelligence features. That makes a crucial distinction necessary: switching a feature off through supported settings is not the same operation as removing its downloaded components. A disabled feature may still occupy storage. A third-party removal tool may change more than the controls Apple exposes to users.

Count the maintenance, too

The developer claims RemoveMacAI also prevents the features from downloading again. Treat that as a claim about the tool, not a guarantee about every future macOS update. The supplied reporting does not establish the exact files removed, all system dependencies affected, or the procedure for restoring the features. The feature bundle apparently needs an unpacking service; customers still need to know what the service takes away.

There is evidence of interest, but not of a mass rejection. Futurism reports nearly 2,000 GitHub stars, dozens of forks, and more than 1,000 upvotes on the developer’s Reddit post. Those counts show attention within particular communities. They do not count successful removals, prove reliability, or tell us how most Mac owners value Apple Intelligence.

The purchase decision continues after the laptop leaves the store. Owners who use these features have a reason to retain the components, provided the storage cost fits their needs. Owners who do not use them have a reasonable interest in reclaiming space. Apple could reduce the burden by providing a supported removal path with clear information about retained files, restoration, and update behavior.

If turning features off meets your goal, prefer supported controls available on your macOS version. If reclaiming storage is essential, assess RemoveMacAI’s current documentation, recovery procedure, and compatibility before considering it, and maintain a backup. The report does not establish that removal is harmless or reliably reversible. Watch for verified before-and-after storage results and evidence of what subsequent macOS updates restore before treating this exit as maintenance-free.
