The Eiffel Tower Restores the Women’s Shift

The Eiffel Tower was set to reopen on Tuesday after employees walked out over the treatment of women staff during a Saturday visit by a Hindu religious delegation. SETE, the company operating the Paris landmark, acknowledged that the group had asked for the visit to limit “interactions with women.” Management accepted conditions that SETE now says “should not have been accepted.”

Workers described an instruction, not a vague discomfort. Some women were told to leave their posts and withdraw elsewhere; men replaced women at certain positions; and women employees were told not to cross designated areas while the delegation was present. Staff condemned being “sidelined, replaced and made invisible because of their sex.” The tower closed during the resulting protest, and management met workers on Monday before announcing the reopening.

The visiting Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha movement apologized for pain or inconvenience while saying that, to its knowledge, nobody had been denied access to the tower. It also said the large delegation’s early visit had been coordinated to reduce disruption. That answer addresses public admission, but the workers’ complaint concerns employment inside the monument: who was permitted to occupy a post, exercise authority, and move through the workplace.

Exceptional hospitality often looks elegant from the receiving room because someone less powerful has already absorbed the exception. Here, a preference presented as religious etiquette traveled through management and emerged as instructions attached to women’s bodies. The guest list briefly edited the rota. Prestige softened the language; the staffing decision supplied the force.

The material account is not yet complete. The available reporting does not establish whether displaced women lost pay, premium assignments, breaks, supervisory authority, or professional access. Paris Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire has promised an investigation, which should preserve the original request, staffing schedules, messages, names of approving managers, and subsequent revisions. Without that record, the institution can condemn the result while forgetting the route by which it was produced.

SETE’s present position is that such conditions should not have been accepted. For that promise to govern the next high-status visit, it needs a written rule: requests involving exclusion by sex will not alter staffing, access, assignments, or movement, and employees may challenge an instruction without surrendering wages or shifts. The reopening restores the women workers to view; the policy must ensure they cannot be edited out again when the next distinguished party arrives.
