Nor does a day count fully describe energy, pain, appetite, sleep, mobility, anxiety, and the burden of constant monitoring. A kidney can be functioning while a patient’s life remains heavily medicalized.

Researchers should preserve serial laboratory values, drug doses, biopsy findings, infections, adverse events, protocol changes, hospital admissions, quality-of-life reports, and the reasons for removing an organ. Future recipients need an inheritance of evidence, not promotional shorthand.
If trials continue to succeed, the next contest will concern access rather than endurance. Regulators and transplant programs will have to decide who qualifies, whether a pig kidney is offered as a bridge or destination therapy, how animal welfare and infection surveillance are enforced, and who pays for the organ and lifelong care.
