Anakin Skywalker Is Not Running for Congress

Trump supporters circulated Anakin Skywalker memes before Tuesday’s US midterms, and Elon Musk shared an image placing Anakin on a throne, Wired reports.

The posts attach familiar characters and family imagery to authoritarian power, giving supporters a shared political identification without specifying policies.

The striking move is not that fans have misremembered a plot. These posters offer a different object of sympathy: the wounded hero deserves his family and his throne, while the people beneath imperial power slip outside the picture. Familiarity supplies the warmth; the edit changes who receives it.

Before Tuesday’s US midterm elections, Trump supporters are circulating Star Wars memes that cast Anakin Skywalker as a figure of political identification, Wired reports. One image shows Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi holding a lightsaber during the climax of Revenge of the Sith. Its caption replaces the confrontation with a complaint about mail-in ballots arriving overnight. A familiar scene supplies the conflict before anyone has to explain an actual count.

The more revealing image is the one Elon Musk shared: Anakin seated on a throne with Padmé, their children, and imperial troops. Wired describes the image as seemingly AI-generated. Musk’s caption reads, “This is what they stole from us.” The arrangement joins domestic reunion to imperial command. The family is together, the guards are assembled, and the throne apparently belongs among the household essentials.

That picture offers an alternative past inside a familiar fictional world. Anakin can have the family his actions helped destroy without relinquishing the glamour of power. Recognition makes the revision easy to enter: viewers already know the faces and the loss. The political invitation is to experience domination as something tender that should have been preserved.

Other posts make the identification explicit. Wired documents an Anakin montage accompanied by the declaration, “We sympathize with him, not the republic.” That is a poster’s chosen allegiance, not a neutral account of the films. The prequels depict Anakin’s transformation into Darth Vader as a catastrophe, not a successful grievance procedure. These edits move sympathy away from the people imperial power harms and toward the powerful man who believes himself betrayed.

None of that makes Star Wars fandom a uniform political constituency. Reworking a character can be playful, critical, or simply odd. Nor does circulation establish coordination or persuasion. AI startup founder Guillaume Verdon’s prediction that the edits might turn the midterms is a claim about influence, not evidence of changed votes. What the documented posts do establish is an available style of belonging. A campaign atmosphere can borrow a franchise’s character development without hiring anyone to write a policy.

The useful test is not whether a poster has passed a lore examination. It is what the revision asks supporters to admire, excuse, or overlook. A reunited family is an intelligible desire; a throne guarded by soldiers is a political choice. Viewers can keep their affection for the characters while refusing the suggestion that love becomes more complete when everyone else must obey.
