Remnants of Hurricane Polo brought additional rain to the already flood-struck US Southwest, inundating roads and prompting evacuations in small New Mexico communities because of concern that a dam could fail. That missing specificity matters because evacuation is experienced address by address. Authorities should state what inspectors observed, when the structure was last examined, which measurements are changing, and what threshold would trigger a wider evacuation. They should separate overtopping, seepage, erosion, spillway trouble, and confirmed structural damage rather than folding every condition into the single word concern.

Before residents return, officials must publish the dam’s current condition, roads that are genuinely open, the status of water and power, remaining flood hazards, and the evidence behind lifting the order. People can tolerate an uncertain forecast. They should not have to decode an uncertain instruction while carrying the household to the car.
