The figure appeared in a leaked internal compensation spreadsheet containing submissions from about 350 employees. Their median reported usage was roughly $300, making the $28,000 entry an extreme outlier rather than evidence of ordinary company-wide spending.

Microsoft was also tightening the rules. In an early-August memo, CoreAI executive vice president Jay Parikh told employees that the company was not optimizing for maximum token consumption and would manage the expense like any other critical resource. Microsoft reportedly planned to make a less token-hungry model, OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol, the default for internal use.

The mechanism is simple. Easy access invites workers to test prompts, rerun tasks, compare outputs and automate larger jobs. Token pricing makes every attempt countable. The interface offers experimentation first; the internal ledger supplies friction later.

The outlier is not a verdict on the employee. The available report does not identify the person, describe the work, establish what limits were communicated or show whether the expense produced anything valuable. A large total could represent useful processing, a poorly designed workflow or undirected trial and error. Without the output, the number mainly measures consumption.

That gap matters because an employer can issue a broad command to adopt AI while leaving each worker to discover the practical budget. Monitoring then gives management a human name to place beside the cost. Unless alerts, approval thresholds and project budgets operate before spending escalates, accountability begins after the company has already collected the usage.

Cost discipline is reasonable. Unlimited internal compute would be difficult to defend. But the controls will create a workplace hierarchy if some teams receive approved capacity while others must ration attempts or explain every spike. The hierarchy will be written in exceptions.

Microsoft can clarify the system by publishing internal spending thresholds, warning workers before unusual costs accumulate, and evaluating usage beside documented outcomes. The unresolved questions are concrete: what limit did this employee receive, what work consumed the tokens, and who had authority to stop the meter?
